Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has unveiled new sports kits for its student athletes, with the designs created by students as the University seeks to give its teams a stronger identity on and off the field.
The new kits mark a shift from treating sportswear merely as competition attire to making it part of the University’s sporting identity, with students playing a direct role in shaping what their teams wear.
The latest designs carry a distinctly student-driven touch, with students involved in designing kits that will represent the University in sporting competitions.
The move comes as JKUAT continues to strengthen its sporting profile. During the 2025/2026 season, University athletes collected 35 medals and trophies across various competitions, including nine gold, 16 silver and 10 bronze awards.
Director of Sports and Games Dr Peter Waweru Kamaku said the new kits reflect the University’s commitment to giving students a greater role in shaping its sporting identity.
“The new kit reflects the creativity, participation and sense of ownership that we want to see among our students. Having students contribute to the designs gives them an opportunity to leave their mark on the teams they represent, while giving our athletes a distinctive identity whenever they compete,” Dr Kamaku said.
He said the University would continue to invest in initiatives that strengthen its sports programme and create an environment in which students can develop their talents and compete with confidence.
“Sports remains an important part of the student experience at JKUAT, and we want to keep creating opportunities for our athletes to grow, compete and represent the University with pride,” he added.
Velper Shadda Odero, a fourth-year Mass Communication student and member of the JKUAT handball team, said the new kits give athletes a stronger sense of pride when representing the University.
“Putting on a kit designed by fellow students makes it feel more personal. You know that students from your own community played a part in creating what you wear when representing JKUAT,” she said.
Odero said the initiative also shows that students can contribute to the University in ways that go beyond the classroom.
“As athletes, we want to represent JKUAT well whenever we compete. Having a kit that carries our identity and reflects student creativity gives us an added sense of belonging,” she added.
